HAVE I GOT A LEAK ?

Leaks can occur in many different parts of your hot water system.  Read the following information for a general guide to identifying the cause and how to put it right.

Mains Water

Mains water leaks will usually give you a constant noise of running water.  Turn off the mains stop tap and see if the noise disappears.  Some water authorities can assist you with this procedure.

Rain, Wind and Snow

During heavy rain and wind it is possible that rainwater can be blown into the boiler flue.  The water runs down and gives the impression that the boiler is leaking.  Thawing snow can also do this.  To check if the weather is causing the 'leak' see if it is constant or if it disappears as the weather eases back.

Dealing with Water Leaks

If you intend to patch a leak by sticking glue or sealant on it, please be aware that it may make a plumber's job worse (and cost more to fix) if the problem becomes all gummed up.  Such remedies usually do not work, otherwise plumbers would use them !  Read the instructions fully as they may get you out of trouble.

Main Areas where Leaks can Appear

Please note that pipes will not leak unless they are attacked by corrosion.  It is usually moving parts such as motorised valves or radiator valves that leak.  The following are parts of your system that will usually be the causes of leaks.  Click on each for more detailed information.

Drain off Cocks

Auto Air Vents

The Top of the Hot Water Cylinder

Valves (including radiators)

The Ball Float Valve / Roof Tanks
